Proposed Expansion Could Ease Vet Tech Shortage
by Jen Nigro
Colby County Community College in Colby, KS has launched an effort to expand its Veterinary Technician Program through a series of satellite programs in the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor. The college is requesting $18.7 million in federal funding to create satellite programs at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Manhattan Area Technical College in Manhattan, as well as Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS and Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, KS.
Currently, there is no technician program in the corridor. The requested funding would pay for personnel support, materials, equipment, supplies, buildings and land. According to the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, 95 of Kansas’ 105 counties have a shortage of veterinary technicians. Colby Community College has the only accredited Veterinary Technology Program in the state. KVMA Executive Vice President Gary Reser, who supports the project, says the satellite program will help ease that shortage.
