KVTA would like to congratulate Jodi Lynn Mermis for being chosen as the recipient of the 2010 KVTA Scholarship. Ms. Mermis, from Hays, KS, is a 2009 graduate of Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. Ms. Mermis just finished her 1st year in the veterinary technology program at Colby Community College.
he $250 KVTA Scholarship is awarded annually to one qualified applicant who the executive board believes will make a significant contribution to the Veterinary Technology field. To be eligible, the applicant must be enrolled as a full time student in a Veterinary Technology program in the state of Kansas, carry a 3.0 GPA, and must also be a member of the Student Veterinary Technology Association. Each applicant must submit an application along with an essay on why they chose to become a Veterinary Technician and an idea on how to better the profession.
KVTA had several very qualified applicants this year and is excited to have so many bright, passionate individuals getting ready to join our profession.

The Maple Woods Veterinary Technology students took first place in the Missouri Veterinary Technician Student Academia Bowl. They successfully competed against five other Missouri Vet. Tech. programs during the MVMA convention.

KVTA would like to congratulate Stephanie Barnhill, MBA, RVT for being selected to appear on the cover of the August edition of Veterinary Technician. Stephanie, who has been a member of both KVTA and NAVTA since 1994, works as a senior veterinary consultation service technician for Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. In her spare time she enjoys showing her Siberian huskies at regional and national shows. She is also an AKC judge for Siberian huskies, Samoyed, and junior showmanship.

KVTA was very fortunate send three Executive Board members to the NAVTA Leadership Conference held in conjunction with the CVC in Kansas City. Kara Burns, MS, MEd, LVT, Bridget Keesling, RVT, BS, and Cheryl Hermann, BA, RVT participated in a very motivational speech, “Suceed In the Box, Changing Company Culture”, presented by Rick Grandinetti. The Executive Board members also discussed “Association Legal Issues” with John Thomas, P.A. As a result, KVTA is now working on incorporating our organization, filing a 501(c)6 with the IRS, and purchasing liability insurance. KVTA would like to thank NAVTA and Hill’s Pet Nutrition for sponsoring this educational and inspiring workshop. And after several years, KVTA once again had a presence at CVC this year. A big thank you goes to Karla Capper, RVT, for setting up and manning our promotional booth. Last, but not least, KVTA would like to congratulate Stephanie Barnhill, MBA, RVT, for being selected to appear on the August issue of Veterinary Technician. Stephanie has been a member of KVTA for 15 years. Congratulations Stephanie!

KVTA would like to congratulate Ally Justine Nuss for being chosen as the recipient of the 2009 KVTA Scholarship. The KVTA Executive Board chose Ms. Nuss because we feel she will make significant contributions to the field of Veterinary Technology. To be eligible, the applicant must be enrolled full-time in AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program in Kansas, carry a 3.0 GPA, and be an active member in the Student Veterinary Technology Association.
