MVMA Essential Services Guide

Essential Services
All emergency care, such as the following:

  • Signs of trauma or shock
  • Heat exhaustion or stroke, frostbite, or exposure to cold
  • Electric shock
  • Uncontrolled bleeding from the nose, mouth, ears, rectum, or other
  • Ophthalmic emergencies
  • Stumbling/ disoriented
  • Frequent/ persistent vomiting and/or diarrhea; bloody vomiting/ diarrhea; matching or unproductive
  • Vomiting, particularly if the stomach or abdomen looks bloated
  • Intractable abdominal pain
  • Difficulty breathing or other respiratory distress
  • Collapse or Coma
  • Paralysis or severe neck or back pain (arching, twisted)
  • Painful or bloated abdomen
  • More than 2 seizures within a 24-hour period, sever seizure, or a seizure that does not stop after several
    minutes
  • Dystocia (i.e., difficult birth)
  • Suspected poisoning/ toxicity; allergic reactions, suspected toxic snake/ spider/ insect bites
  • Extreme lethargy
  • Prolapse of the rectum or uterus
  • Foreign body ingestion, urethral obstruction
  • Euthanasia
  • Significant morbidity secondary to a neoplastic condition
  • Emergency surgeries related to above conditions, including C sections, GDV (bloat), lacerations, bite wounds,
  • Fractures, pyometras, etc.

Urgent care cases:

  • For instance related to:
  • Neurological or ocular changes,
  • Ear and skin infections
  • Emergent GI cases
  • Emergent non-chronic lameness evaluations
  • Quality of life issues

Also

  • Rabies and Lepto vaccinations.
  • Core vaccinations for previously unvaccinated animals such as puppies and kittens.
  • Pets that must stay on medications for uncontrolled blood level testing that cannot be postponed.
  • Spay/ neuter for pets pending adoption
  • Surgeries for bleeding or enlarging lumps with suspected neoplasia. (If applicable, attempt fine needle aspirate before considering full surgical procedure.
  • Emergency dentals with infections and/or abscesses
  • Aural hematomas
  • Emergency enucleations
  • Emergent specialty consultations and appointments that cannot be rescheduled/ postponed.
  • Ongoing scheduled chemotherapy and/or radiation oncology treatments
  • Emergent orthopedic surgery if they are causing quality of life concerns, such as a broken leg.
  • Heartworm testing and preventatives
  • Treatment for acute/chronic pain

Any other condition that, if not performed, would negatively impact the pet’s immediate and future health.
